  1. Host a Secondhand Santa instead of a Secret Santa
  2. Have a Thriftmas Jumper Day
  3. Check the Sustainable Swaps Party Checklist (and check it twice)

Know who your office elves are? Send them this kit to get them started!

1. Secondhand Santa

In 2022 we spent a whopping £280 million on Secret Santa gifts for our colleagues, and only a third of people said theirs was useful (according to our polling, plenty of the gifts didn’t even make it home from the party🚮. This year, say no to a plastic reindeer that poops chocolate, and yes to Secondhand Santa. We’re challenging workplaces to embrace preloved and homemade gifts. Hubbub’s Christmas party last year saw watercolour pet portraits, preloved books, vinyl records, handmade camera cases, and lots of homemade edible treats! More sustainable, more thoughtful, more joyful - and cheaper too.

2. Thriftmas Jumper Day

An obnoxiously colourful and joyful expression of festivity? Of course we’re here for it. But, with two in five Christmas jumpers worn only once over the festive period, and most of them made of plastic (!) we don’t think we need new ones every single year.

If you’re celebrating Christmas Jumper Day, encourage your team to make a more sustainable style choice. You could set up a swap shop in your office, encourage borrowing, buying secondhand, or DIY-ing jumpers they already own – the more naff the better.

When you make it official you remove any self-consciousness about swapping or buying secondhand, by celebrating it instead. This doesn’t just help your team save money – but helps normalise sustainable clothing choices too…

3. Sustainable Swaps Party Checklist

The big end-of-the-year-work-do is on the horizon. It would be rude(olph) not to celebrate after all the hard work this year!

You’ve probably already got your own checklist; food, decorations, venue, entertainment…

Our check list has some simple swaps you can make to keep your celebrations lower carbon, lower waste, and probably lower cost too! Pick and choose what could work for your event. The more sustainable swaps you can make, the merrier!
